Diary of V continued
"I tried." Dan set a plate in front of me. It smelled
heavenly. "But she wouldn't eat anything."
"Too bad." Then again, maybe it wasn't such a bad
idea for her to maintain a professional distance from
the family.
"I was thinking," Dan said, starting slowly.
"Thinking what?"
"I've got a new client -- Eli Strauss. I'm building a
wall unit for him. Maple, natural finish. Anyway,
Eli's a nice guy, new to town -- and he's single.
Carmen's single. What if I tried to play matchmaker?"
I didn't like the idea at all and had a knot in my
stomach to prove it. "Uh, we should probably keep out
of Carmen's personal life."
"Okay. It was just a thought." He paused. "I just
figured, they're both single...well, whatever."
I finished up dinner, then cleaned the kitchen while
Dan got Pete ready for bed. As I loaded the
dishwasher, I felt myself grow increasingly restless
and irritated, though I wasn't sure why. Was it Dan's
benign offer of matchmaking that had me feeling this
way? What was it that bothered me so? By the time I'd
loaded the last plate, I realized it was because
Dan had clearly spent some time thinking about Carmen
and her love life. He had thought of her not merely as
our house assistant but as a single woman. I know it
shouldn't bother me, but it does.
